WCU Catamount High School Honor Band
Western Carolina University Bands are pleased to invite you and your students to participate in the 2nd Annual WCU High School Honor Band to be held January 25-27, 2018. We are honored to have Dr. Paula Holcomb, Director of Bands at State University of NY at Fredonia, as our guest conductor. This will be an exciting and inspiring weekend for your finest young wind and percussion instrumentalists to rehearse and perform challenging music in WCU’s Bardo Arts Center.

Nominations for the Senior High Honor Band Festival can be done online (see link below).
Entry Deadline is Monday, November 20th.
Acceptance Notifications will be sent out by Friday, December 8th.
The Honor Band is open to students in Grades 9-12. Students will be selected through an application/recommendation process. Please nominate only those students who are interested in participating.

Dates and Schedule
Activities for the weekend will begin around 5:00PM on Thursday, January 25 and will conclude by 6:00PM on Saturday, January 27, 2018. The final schedule will be included in the acceptance packet. The final concert will be held Saturday, January 27th at 3:00PM.

Fees and Housing
The fee for the weekend is $60.00 and includes the cost of music, our guest conductor, and meals. Meals include lunch and dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday. All meals will be served at the Courtyard Dining Hall, conveniently located within a short walking distance of Coulter Building and Bardo Arts Center, and are offered on an all-you-can-eat basis. Transportation to and from the event, lodging, and other meals are the responsibility of the student and/or school.
2018 Guest Conductor
Dr. Paula Holcomb, Guest Conductor
Dr. Paula Holcomb came to the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1999 as Director of Bands after serving in a similar position for 20 years at Central College in Pella, Iowa. Under her direction at Central College, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band toured internationally to Canada, Europe, and Mexico and performed at Alice Tully Hall of New York City's Lincoln Center. At Fredonia, the extensive band program consists of four concert bands. Dr. Holcomb conducts the Wind Ensemble and musicals, and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting. Additionally, she initiated the conducting program as part of the Master of Music in Performance.
Highly sought after as an adjudicator and guest conductor, Dr. Holcomb has conducted bands and orchestras in 39 states, South America, Australia, Mexico, Europe, and Canada. She has presented Conducting Symposiums in Canada, South America, Australia and the United States. Dr. Holcomb is former assistant horn of the Des Moines Symphony and past president of the Iowa Music Educators Association. Recently, she was presented with the A. Frank Miller award from Kappa Kappa Psi, served on the Council and Artistic Planning Conference Committee for the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, serving on the board of the Conductors Guild and is currently Northeastern Division President-elect of the College Band Directors National Association.

Dr. Margaret Underwood, Director of Bands
Margaret Underwood is the Director of Bands at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. In addition to conducting the WCU Wind Ensemble, she teaches courses in music education and supervises student teachers. Prior to her current appointment she served as Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. Previously, she was the Assistant Director of Bands at Mansfield University in Pennsylvania and taught middle and high school band for several years in New York. She is an active guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and has conducted at the CBDNA North Central Regional Conference. In 2009, she presented her research on Robert Kurka's The Good Soldier Schweik Suite at the CBDNA National Conference and the WASBE International Conference. The Journal of World Association of Band and Symphonic Ensembles also published her article on Robert Kurka's The Good Soldier Schweik Suite.
Ensembles under her direction have received praise from composers such as Carolyn Bremer and Carol Barnett. In November 2013, the Otterbein University Wind Ensemble performed at the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington.
